LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. (July 13, 2015) – Amidst gang violence, poverty, and religious turmoil, one group of children from Chaguanas, Trinidad found opportunity, friendship and even magic on their journey to compete in the prestigious event at Walt Disney World.
Crown Trace FC is comprised of kids from Chaguanas, an impoverished area rife with crime and drugs. But the team’s coach is using soccer as a pathway for these less fortunate kids to escape their dangerous environment and reach a brighter future. The effort is working. One of the club’s players recently received a full collegiate soccer scholarship to an American college, and another player is now on Trinidad’s national women’s team.
This week, Crown Trace FC traveled nearly 2,000 miles to the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex to compete against teams from around the world in the 2015 Disney Cup International.
More than 3,000 youth athletes competed in this year’s event.
Since 1999, the Disney Cup International Tournament has attracted teams from more than 20 countries, giving participants a unique opportunity to compete on the same fields as teams from the English Premier League and Major League Soccer. The tournament runs from July 13-19 at ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex.
