Rachel Talise from Panorama City, Calif., completed the Doctor Strange 10K race during the Super Heroes Half Marathon Weekend at Disneyland Resort on Saturday, which was no small feat given that two years ago she couldn’t use her legs or hands.
In August 2014, she became paralyzed from the waist down and in her hands. The cause was Guillain–Barré syndrome, a very rare condition (1 or 2 cases per 100,000 people annually) that results in the immune system attacking the nervous system, leaving many patients permanently without full mobility.
After three months of physical and occupational therapy at a rehabilitation facility, Talise regained mobility and learned how to walk again. Though she is not yet fully recovered, she was determined to get back to running. The 10K race was her first since losing her mobility.
