With the start of the high school football season upon us, 22 varsity football teams, including some nationally-recognized squads, competed in the KSA Events Kick-Off Classic at ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex at Walt Disney World Resort from Aug. 23 – Aug. 27.

The event brought together some of the top programs from across the country, and gave them the opportunity to face teams from outside of their home areas.  During the events, teams from Florida, Colorado, Ohio, California, Pennsylvania and Illinois squared off at the complex.

On Thursday (Aug. 24), Central Florida’s Merritt Island took on heralded Avon High School (Ohio). Considered one of the top out-of-state matchups of the event by USAToday.com, the game pitted Merritt Island , who finished 7-4 last season, against Avon, who went undefeated (9-0) in their regular season. The Merritt Island Mustangs jumped out to an early 2-0 lead when they blocked a punt that bounced into the endzone for a safety. Before the end of the first half, Merritt Island scored a touchdown, extending their lead to 9-0. In the second half, the game took an exciting turn when the teams scored three touchdowns in three minutes between them. With 27 seconds left to play in the game,  Avon kicked a field goal to take a 20-16 lead and would hold on to win.
