Nine-year-old Genna Brennan (Camp Hill, Penn.) has faced a series of obstacles on her way to becoming one of the over 100,000 runners and spectators who have traveled to Central Florida for the Walt Disney World Marathon Weekend. At age 2, Genna was diagnosed with Asperger’s and has been a victim of bullying since second grade. Yet her struggles haven’t diminished her dedication, enthusiasm and positive attitude.
This year Genna became involved with the Girls on the Run 5K program, which uses running to teach young girls life lessons about self-esteem and healthy living. Although Genna has trouble keeping up with the other girls in the program, she always participates with a smile. Since Genna joined, her mother has seen a significant difference in her. She exudes confidence, focuses on positive thinking and avoids internalizing negative thoughts or emotions that result from the bullying Genna will be participating in the Disney Family Fun Run 5K on Thursday.
