Former Chicago Bulls basketball player and Detroit Pistons assistant coach, Ron Harper, watched his son Ron Harper Jr., participate in the AAU National Championships tournament on Friday. Harper Jr. competed in the 11th grade gold championship division for the Ring City Elite, a highly competitive club basketball team in the New York tri-state area.

Harper Jr. is one of approximately 4,800 elite athletes from across the nation competing in the 16U/17U AAU Boys’ Basketball National Championships and Super Showcase (July 20-24) events. The AAU National Championships are the proving ground for the next generation of college and professional superstars. A number of current NBA stars, including Dwyane Wade (Chicago Bulls), Chandler Parsons (Memphis Grizzlies), reigning two-time NBA MVP Stephen Curry (Golden State Warriors) and 2016 NBA Champion Kyrie Irving (Cleveland Cavaliers), competed in these events as youth athletes.
