LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. (May 31, 2022) – Special Olympics USA Games athletes participating in the 2022 Special Olympics USA Games are receiving the “I’m Going to Disney World” treatment inspired by Disney’s iconic Super Bowl tradition ahead of the USA Games, which kicked off on Sunday throughout Central Florida.
ESPN and Walt Disney World Resort brought a new twist to Disney’s popular “I’m Going to Disney World” Super Bowl campaign by featuring several Special Olympics USA Games athletes in a national commercial that is airing on ESPN and social media sites around the country this week. The heart-warming video showcases footage of several Special Olympic athletes in action with the simple tagline “I’m Going to Disney World!”
The spot featured a variety of athletes from the USA Games including golfer Amy Bockerstette, flag football player Ryan Gronowski, softball player Rafael “Tripp” Trinidad and swimmer Yoli Sheilds. The athletes were shown in the spot playing their sports before shouting “I’m Going to Disney World!”
To commemorate the campaign, the featured athletes also are appearing in a welcome parade at Magic Kingdom featuring popular Disney characters, celebratory confetti and magical entertainment as part of the final leg of the official Special Olympics USA Games Law Enforcement Torch Run that began in Chicago and ended at Exploria Stadium in downtown Orlando. It was a festive scene reminiscent of Disney championship celebrations that regularly feature some of the biggest names in sports history.
The super-sized celebration added to Walt Disney World Resort’s long history of supporting the Special Olympics, which has staged various events at ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex year after year. This year’s competitions for the USA Games will primarily take place at the Disney sports complex, including basketball, cheerleading, volleyball and soccer. Disney Live Entertainment is set to produce the Special Olympics USA Games Opening Ceremony which will be televised by ABC and streamed on the ESPN App and ESPN3 this Sunday.
Coverage of the Games will continue through Tuesday and Wednesday on ESPN2 and the ESPN App in addition to live streaming coverage on ESPN3 throughout the week. Coverage wraps on June 12 with a special program, “Best of the Special Olympics USA Games,” on ABC, ESPN3 and the ESPN App.
